Prosecutor: Newark Arsonist Caused Orange Fires That Injured 3 Firefighters

A Newark man was arrested after he purposely caused several fires that injured three firefighters in Orange, authorities said Wednesday.

Marvin L. Lewter, 35, set fire to two homes on the 300 block of Henry Street on Nov. 24, 2020,  Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and Orange Police Director Todd Warren said.

On April 5, Lewter started a blaze at one of the Henry Street locations and then another on the 400 block of Codner Street, authorities said.

Because two Orange firefights sustained injuries while fighting one of the fires on Henry Street on April 5, Lewter was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, a third-degree offense.

He was charged with two counts of aggravated arson, a second-degree offense, for the Nov. 24 incidents, authorities said.
